Calamity or Misfortune Tax Relief
Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the Tamarack Fire. Section 170 of the Revenue and Taxation Code provides for tax relief to people affected by such a calamity. A few years ago, the Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance that I presented to them which helps expedite the tax relief process by allowing the Assessors Office to speed up the processes and proactively adjust values as needed. We have proactively adjusted the values for all property that had improvement damage that we are aware of. If your property was damaged or destroyed under circumstances beyond your control, such as by fire or flood, and the loss in market value exceeds $10,000, you may be entitled to a reduction in your assessment and subsequent property tax obligation. Please fill out an Application for Reassessment of Property Damaged by Misfortune or Calamity and return it to the Assessor's Office within 12 months of the calamity.
Visit the State Board of Equalizations site to learn more about calamity relief.
