Bear Box Grant Program

**The Bear Box Grant Program is now Closed**

Key Points of Bear Box Grant Program

All applications must be submitted by 5/15/2025 and containers installed by 5/31/2025 to qualify for grant fund.

  • The program is available to residential homeowners on the East Slope of Alpine County.
  • The homeowner must select an Installer from an approved list of contractors provided by the County.
  • The contracted installer will provide Alpine County with an invoice for services that includes: property address, type of bear box installed, date of installation and photographs of the installed Bear Box.
  • The County will provide up to $2,200 in funding to the contracted installer.  If the homeowner wishes to install a Bear Box that is more than $2,200 they are responsible for the additional cost.
  • The Bear Box is not intended to replace garbage cans but rather is used as a receptacle to store cans. County ordinances require trash to be in containers, such as cans with lids.
  • Alpine County does not fix, maintain or warranty bear boxes.  Bear boxes are the responsibility of the homeowner and must be kept free of obstacles/snow/debris to allow for garbage collection.

Bear Box Requirements and Placement

  • The bear box must be located at minimum of twelve (12) feet and a maximum of fifteen (15) feet from where the base of the driveway meets the street.
  • DDI only services 32-gallon cans in Alpine County. Enclosures that hold multiple 32-gallon cans are acceptable.
  • Additional charges will apply to service enclosures more than 15 feet from edge of road.
  • Enclosure doors can open towards driveway or towards street, as long as access is safe and clear of vehicles, snow, ice, rocks, etc.
  • Enclosures may be mounted up to 18-inches above ground level.
  • DDI is available to meet on site and/or talk to property owners before installation takes place, free of charge.
  • Servicing of Bear Boxes on private roads will need to be addressed on a case by case basis.
