[ARCHIVED] Internet Speed Survey

One of the things we need to get better internet service here is documentation that we are underserved.  If you want better service you need to help.  On your smartphone download and install the free NACo TestIt app from either the Apple Store or Google Play.  Set your smartphone to use your wifi connection, tell the app or let it report your location, and run the test several times.  Do the same with the CalSPEED app which is also free.  For those without a smartphone you can download a desktop version of CalSPEED here.

The first is a new national internet service database promoted by the National Assoc. of Counties to prove that rural America is underserved.  The second is a program by the California Public Utilities Commission which is doing the same for California.  Without these test results the higher speeds claimed by the carriers (Frontier) are accepted as reality.

It only takes a few minutes to run the tests.  It will help us convince the Federal Communication Commission and the California Public Utility Commission of the need for better internet service in Alpine County.

About CalSPEED

CalSPEED, released by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), empowers end-users with a professional-level, industry-standard testing tool to measure the quality and speed of their residential fixed internet connection.

CalSPEED conducts a two-phase test including initial testing and results validation in order to ensure statistically significant measurements. Test your upload speed, download speed, message delay (latency), and message delay variation (jitter) using CalSPEED. The first two metrics measure your Internet usage experience, while the second two measure the voice quality of voice over IP technologies.

Results are uploaded to a public repository at CPUC to provide you with the ability to compare broadband coverage at your location with other areas in California.
